Daylight Savings – A Holistic Human Centric Lighting approach

Say goodbye to those winter blues and hello to a longer daylight. During winter people spend limited time outdoors during the day so their exposure to natural light is reduced, which really affects overall mood. As lighting controls become automated and sophisticated, they have the power to become more human-centric. Tunable White Lights can improve health and well-being, studies have shown poor lighting can have negative effects on our circadian rhythm. The Circadian rhythm is a 24-hour clock known as our sleep/wake cycle. Circadian rhythm responds to lightness and darkness. Too much or too little can affect our behavior, how we sleep, and overall personal health.

Axxess Tunable white lighting allows for adjustments to the intensity and color temperature of lighting to mimic natural light. Blue-white light is best for exposure during the day. Amber light is best for exposure closer to the evening, as it is meant to mimic the setting sun. Of course, natural light on its own does that better than any source.

Color Temperature lighting

Color temperature is closely associated with the synchronization of human circadian rhythms to the 24-hour solar cycle. The color temperature of sunlight has a variety of low to high. The early morning and late afternoon sunlight has a more significant red component of the light spectrum while the middle of the day has a bluer component or a “cooler feel”. Since most people spend 90% of their time indoors, it is critical to adapt lighting patterns to the natural daylight.

The Axxess Smart Lighting system is scalable and allows for simple configuration to adjust to a more Holistic Human Centric Lighting approach.
